Kobo Glo N514 Not Charging? The USB Port Was Fine — A Faulty IC Was the Real Problem!
Is your Kobo Glo N514 eReader not charging or refusing to turn on, even after the USB charging port has been replaced? The problem may not be the charging port at all. At AppleFix & Tech Engineers in Hamilton, New Zealand, we diagnosed a Kobo Glo N514 that remained dead after another repair shop had already replaced its Micro USB charging port.
Using board-level diagnostics and a thermal camera, we located a shorted component marked CM5 on the circuit board. After replacing the faulty component, the Kobo Glo powered on and worked again. This repair demonstrates why accurate diagnosis is important when an eReader continues to have charging problems after a port replacement.
Kobo Glo N514 Charging Port Replacement Did Not Fix the Fault
The Kobo Glo N514 was brought in because it would not charge or turn on. The Micro USB charging port had already been replaced, but the device remained unresponsive.
Why Was the Kobo Still Not Charging?
A charging port replacement will only solve the problem if the port itself is responsible. In this case, further testing was required to investigate the charging and power circuits on the motherboard.
Finding the Real Fault with a Thermal Camera
We used a thermal camera as part of our diagnostic process to help identify the faulty area on the circuit board.
A Shorted Component Marked CM5
Testing revealed a shorted component marked CM5. This was the fault preventing the Kobo from operating correctly. We replaced the faulty component using component-level electronics repair techniques and then tested the device again.
The Kobo Glo N514 powered on after the repair, confirming that the problem was not simply the USB charging port.
