Xbox One X “No Signal” Even With a New HDMI Port: The Hidden HDMI Retimer Fault
Xbox One X Has No Picture After an HDMI Port Replacement? Here’s the Real Fault
You hear the fan, the power light is on, and the console starts up. But your TV says “No Signal.” You replaced the HDMI port, and there’s still no picture.
We see this often in our Hamilton workshop. In this repair, a new HDMI port had been fitted and soldered well, but the console still had no video output. The port was never the problem. A small chip on the motherboard called the HDMI retimer had failed.
This post covers what we found, how we found it, and how it was fixed. It also covers the other types of Xbox repair we do for customers in Hamilton, Waikato and the rest of New Zealand.
Xbox One X No Display, No Signal or Black Screen: Common Symptoms
An Xbox One X with a video fault usually shows one or more of these:
- The console powers on, but the TV shows no signal or a black screen
- The Xbox turns on normally but there is no picture on any TV
- The HDMI port was replaced and the fault is still there
- Video worked before a drop, a liquid spill, a power surge or a bent HDMI plug
- The console works with a different HDMI cable or TV, but only sometimes
Many people assume a no-picture Xbox means a broken HDMI port. Sometimes it does, but not always.
What We Checked First
Before opening a motherboard, we rule out the simple causes:
- A different HDMI cable and a different TV. This removes the cable and the display as suspects.
- The correct port. The Xbox One X has an HDMI OUT port, which is the one that sends video to the TV.
- A display reset. This clears a stuck resolution or display setting.
- The replacement HDMI port. We looked for lifted pads, bridged pins and weak solder joints.
In this case the new port was soldered firmly and had no bridges or damaged pads. The port was fine.
What Is an HDMI Retimer, and Why Does It Cause No Display?
On the Xbox One X, the video signal does not go straight from the processor to the HDMI port. It passes through an HDMI retimer IC first. This chip cleans up and re-times the high-speed video signal before it reaches the port.
If the retimer fails, the console can still:
- Power on normally
- Make the usual startup sounds
- Run in the background
But there will be no picture, no signal or a black screen. Replacing the HDMI port again won’t fix this, because the fault is on the motherboard.
The faulty part in this repair was a TDP158RSBR HDMI retimer IC in a QFN40 package.
The Repair: Replacing the HDMI Retimer Chip
This is component-level microsoldering. At a high level, the repair went like this:
- Remove the faulty chip. We used a preheater and a hot air station to lift the failed retimer without damaging the board.
- Source a working chip. A good TDP158RSBR was taken from a donor board.
- Clean and prepare the pads. We cleaned the area under the microscope so the new chip would sit flat.
- Align and solder the new chip. The QFN40 package has very fine contacts, so accuracy matters.
- Test the console. We connected an HDMI cable and a display.
The result: the picture came back.
This job needs specialist equipment and experience. A QFN chip is hard to remove and refit without the right tools, and mistakes can damage the board for good.
Why a New HDMI Port Doesn’t Always Fix Xbox No Display
An HDMI port replacement is a common repair, but it only solves port damage. If the console still has no picture afterwards, the fault may be in:
- The HDMI retimer chip
- Damaged pads or broken traces near the HDMI circuit
- Other components in the video path on the motherboard
Component-level diagnosis finds which of these it is, so you don’t pay for a second repair that won’t work.

Should You Repair Your Xbox One X or Replace It?
Repair is often worth it when:
- The console works except for the picture
- You have games, saves or accessories you want to keep
- A new or second-hand replacement costs more than the repair
A proper diagnosis tells you whether the fault is simple or complex before you commit.
FAQ: Xbox One X No Display Repair
Why does my Xbox One X turn on but show no picture?
Common causes are a damaged HDMI port, a faulty HDMI retimer chip, damaged pads or traces, or a motherboard fault. A different cable and TV rule out the easy causes first.
I replaced the HDMI port and there’s still no signal. What now?
The fault is probably elsewhere in the video circuit. The HDMI retimer is the next thing to check, as in the repair above.
What is the TDP158RSBR?
It’s the HDMI retimer IC used on the Xbox One X video path. It’s a small QFN40 chip, and replacing it takes microsoldering equipment.
Can you repair Xbox consoles if I’m not in Hamilton?
Yes. You can send your device to us from anywhere in New Zealand.
Can I fix this myself?
Board-level microsoldering needs specialist tools and experience. A failed attempt can turn a repairable console into one that can’t be fixed.
