How We Fixed an Xbox Series X That Kept Overheating and Shutting Down

Xbox Series X Overheating & Shutting Down? Professional Fan Circuit and Motherboard Repair Guide

An Xbox Series X arrived at our workshop with a common but frustrating problem. After playing games for a short time, the console would overheat and automatically shut down. Initially, it appeared to be a faulty cooling fan, but professional diagnostics revealed the real fault was on the motherboard.

We tested the original cooling fan and then connected a known-good replacement fan. Neither fan would spin, confirming the problem was not the fan itself.

Using professional diagnostic equipment, we checked the fan connector and found there was no 12V supply reaching the fan. After removing the motherboard, we traced the fan power circuit and discovered two capacitors behind the fan connector measuring almost 0 ohms, indicating a short circuit.

To identify the faulty component, we used a thermal imaging camera and freeze spray. One capacitor heated up immediately, confirming it was defective. After carefully removing the shorted capacitor, the short circuit disappeared. Once the motherboard was reassembled, the cooling fan operated normally, and the Xbox Series X no longer overheated or shut down.

This repair highlights why accurate diagnostics are essential. Replacing the fan alone would not have solved the problem because the actual fault was a component on the motherboard.
